Created by explorer and environmentalist Jean-Michel Cousteau and his Ocean Futures Society, Ambassadors of the Environment is a unique, groundbreaking program that introduces young travelers to the extraordinary natural wonders of French Polynesia. The program aims to give young participants aged 9-17 direct, hands-on, interactive experience with knowledge of marine and island ecosystems. Young Ambassadors will explore coral reefs, hike rainforest trails and visit marae (ancient Polynesian temples). They'll learn how black pearls and vanilla are cultivated, how volcanic islands become coral atolls, and how to paddle an outrigger canoe.

Explore the undersea beauty of French Polynesia's second-largest atoll during this unforgettable diving expedition in Fakarava.

Depart the marina platform aboard a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) for the ride to the first of the Fakarava dive sites. French Polynesia's second-largest atoll, Fakarava is part of UNESCO's Classified Nature Biosphere Reserve and is destined to become the next big dive location. There are two passes in Fakarava, including the huge Garuae Pass. Located in the northern end, it is more than a half mile wide and is home to dozens of deep-sea species.

Upon arrival at Garuae Pass, you will receive your safety and diving instructions, then descend between 45 and 90 feet. Experienced divers will then have an opportunity to drift through the pass at depths of between 50 and 130 feet. You will marvel at the sea life, which may include silver-tip sharks, gray sharks, hammerheads, white-tip sharks, and schooling fish by the thousands. The conditions in the Garuae Pass have allowed spectacular staghorn, cauliflower and branching coral to form. Many well-seasoned divers consider Garuae to be one of the most spectacular dives in all of French Polynesia.

Next, you will proceed for a visit to the smaller Tumakohua Pass. Located in the southern end, Tumakohua Pass measures only 200 yards wide. However, it offers both an easy drift dive and excellent snorkeling, and is best suited for intermediate to advanced divers. Both passes serve as hubs for all sorts of marine life, including gray sharks, leopard rays and barracudas.

Following your dive, you will be returned to the marina.

Discover the ancient tribes of the Taaoa Valley during this memorable off-road journey to their archaeological ruins.

Depart the pier for the drive to Taaoa, located approximately 7 miles southwest of Atuona on the coastal road. The Tiu, ancestors of most of the Hivaoan tribes, and several other tribes once lived in the Taaoa Valley. Their archeological ruins can be reached by off-road vehicle, or on foot. During your drive, a visit will be made to the Upeke Ceremonial Center. It is comprised of house platforms, a tohua, public and sacred meae, and storage pits of breadfruit paste for feasts. The tohua was restored for the Third Festival of the Marquesas in 1991.

The remaining area is in the same state in which archeologist Ralph Linton found it in 1920. A tiki measuring 4 feet by 5 feet was found. Only the front part of the stone is carved. The eyes, part of the right arm and the right ear are carved in bas relief. According to Linton, this stone was an altar stone on which sacrificed victims were placed after being killed at the tohua and carried up to the maea. Directly below the platform is an irregular round head carved from a porous black volcanic stone. Since this stone is very easy to carry, it may not be in its original position. On another platform in the tohua section you can see a row of worked keetu slabs. One of them has some carved lines; the design is very difficult to see in sunlight. Locals say it is a whale or canoe, but it is actually a tiki face carved in bas relief.

Following your visit, you will re-board your off-road vehicle for the return drive to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves driving over rough roads. Access to the site involves a path over slippery stones and negotiation of high stone steps up to the tiki. Advanced certified divers won't want to miss this unique opportunity to explore Nuku Hiva's spectacular underwater world during a memorable diving adventure at Hammerhead Sentry Point.

Along with the ship's dive mater, depart the marina platform for the ride to a pair of rock formations that guard the entrance to the Bay of Taiohae. The Marquesas do not boast coral reefs, peaceful lagoons or crystalline waters. Instead, the water is thick with plankton and rich in alluvium; as a result, visibility is reduced. Although some might consider them to be a negative aspect, these conditions permit regular sightings of unusual creatures that include scalloped hammerheads and many types of rays.

Upon arrival at the exit of Taiohae Bay, you will proceed to an area known as the Hammerhead Sentry Point. Here, the underwater topography echoes the steep basalt cliff, and plunges to a sandy bottom at 150 feet. This dive will mainly consist of swimming along the drop-off; usually the location of sharks and rays. The caverns by the wall create a haven for moray eels, scorpion fish and shells. Following your tour, you will be transferred back to the marina platform.

The area at the entrance of the bay is more exposed to the swell, and is choppy compared to the calm waters inside the bay. Visibility is expected to be approximately 45 feet on average, but may be reduced to 15 feet.

Depart the pier for the drive to the Taipivai Valley, one of the richest archeological sites in the Marquesas Islands. The Taipivai Valley is a location made famous by the American writer and former sailor, Herman Melville (1819-1891), who deserted his ship and hid in this valley. Captured by the indigenous natives, he lived in the Taipivai Valley for three weeks, a period during which he observed their way of life. This experience was the inspiration for his novel, Typee.

En route to the Taipivai Valley, you will drive on a steep trail lined with lush flora and vegetation through the island's interior, then traverse the exquisite mountain terrain. Along the way, several stops will be made to take in spectacular vistas and photo opportunities of the coastline, bays and valleys. At one particular stop, you will see your ship anchored in the Bay of Taihoae. Next, you will drive through Taipivai's small agricultural villages, then proceed to a long stretch of beach at the end of the village. Depart the pier in Maroe Bay for the brief transfer by mini-van to the Little Farm, or La Petite Ferme, a 25-year-old established ranch in Huahine. The stable is home to 17 horses. The majority of them are Marquesian horses, which are renowned for their robust, hardy and gentle nature. Despite their winter coat and the area's warm temperatures, they are perfectly adapted to the South Seas' climate.

Upon arrival at the ranch, you will receive your safety and riding instructions, be introduced to your horse and begin your ride towards Motu Maeva. From here, you will take in magnificent views of the idyllic islands of Raiatea, Taha'a and Bora Bora.

Next, you will continue on to Maeva for a visit to the island's most important marae, Potee Marae. You will then be driven along Lak Fauna Nui before arriving in Fare, the island's largest town. Leaving Fare, you will complete the circular drive around Huahine Nui and cross the bridge to Huahine Iti a second time. Depart the pier in an off-road vehicle for the journey inside the volcanic crater from which Moorea was created. En route, you will discover the heart of a huge pineapple plantation inside the island's deepest valley of the island. Moorea, Polynesia's Green Garden, is renowned for its Agricultural School, which receives children from all the outer islands. A stop will be made here to sample some homemade jam. Ice cream and local fruit juices will also be available for purchase. Beach break & Snorkel

Duration: 3 hours - Depart the pier by a motorized boat for a brief ride to one of the Motus (small islet) just off the coast of mainland Moorea. Next, you will continue on to a gorgeous sandy islet surrounded by transparent turquoise waters that are shallow enough to walk comfortably in the sea. Upon arrival, you will have a rare opportunity to feed the awaiting rays; they will gracefully glide around you in exchange for a piece of fish.

Your tour will conclude with a stop at another uninhabited islet nearby. Here, you will be served refreshments, and have an opportunity to explore the beach and swim. You will also be invited to go snorkeling in water 6-10 feet deep, or 2-3 meters. Snorkeling is performed in the shallow waters off the boat, providing an excellent opportunity for beginner and experienced snorkelers. The boat's ladders extend deep into the water, making it easy to embark and disembark the craft.

Depart the pier for the drive to the Richard Gump South Pacific Research Station. Richard Gump, owner and manager of San Francisco's famous, family-owned Gump Department Store, inherited land in Moorea that he eventually donated to UC Berkeley in the early 1980s. The resulting Richard Gump South Pacific Research Station has become the South Pacific's premier U.S. scientific institution. It hosts an impressive array of research projects and field courses, and its Atitia Cultural Center provides outreach to the local schools and community.

Upon arrival, you will take a guided tour of the station and Atitia Center, hear about ongoing projects, and have an opportunity to discuss the role that institutions like this can play in local and global conservation issues. From here, you will continue on for a visit to the Kellum House. The Kellum family first came to Moorea in 1924 aboard a 170-foot schooner. They settled on the shore of Opunohu Bay, and their lovely home and gardens have been part of the local landscape ever since.

During your visit, you will visit their beachfront where Captain Cook anchored in 1777, then walk along a short trail that emerges into the tropical garden surrounding the Kellum house. Mari Kellum will be on hand to serve you a cold drink on the lanai, and talk about her family's fascinating history. Leaving the Kellum gardens, a visit will be made to the Belvedere Lookout for spectacular views and photo opportunities over Opunohu Valley, property once owned by the Kellums that has since been converted into public land.

Following your visit, you will re-board your coach for the return drive to the pier.

Depart the pier aboard a Zodiac boat for the ride to the ledges of a coral reef. Similar to fingers on a hand, these narrow points of coral were formed by thousands of years of surging water and extend from the reef for more than 200 feet. The fingers start at a depth of 30 feet, and extend to 120 feet or more. The sides and top of each extension are rich in hard coral of various species. Upon arrival, your guide will outfit you with your equipment, provide you with your safety and diving instructions, then lead you into the crystal-clear waters.

Sharks, Javanese green moray eels and multicolored tropical fish abound inside this reef, and are constantly moving about in search of food. However, your dive will take place outside of the reef, where the clearest water and some of Polynesia's finest coral formations can be found. The maximum depth of your dive will not exceed 50 feet, or 15 meters.

Next, you will continue on to the ridge separating the 2,887-foot-tall Mouaroa from the 3,960-foot-tall Tohivea. Please note: This tour involves a very strenuous and lengthy 3.5-mile hike over partly-shaded and uneven terrain, uphill and downhill trail walking/hiking with an elevation gain of 1,171 feet. A fun, informative and interactive tour to a relatively little visited side of Tahiti, an inland valley. Join your onboard lecturer archaeologist Mark Eddowes on this unique cultural tour of the upland rain forest of Opunohu valley. Mark has worked clearing, mapping, excavating and restoring archaeological sites in this valley since the 1980's. He works particularly on the life of the ancient Tahitians in this natural environment studying their ancient habitation sites, agricultural terrace complexes, stone tool workshops and ancient temples or marae. The recognized expert on the marae of the Society Islands Mark will share with you his research results into the history of the temples, the rituals practiced there and the warrior chiefs associated with them. You will also learn about the uses in ancient times of the flora and tree species of the island for canoe manufacture, plant medicinal uses and the sculpture of ti'I (tiki figures) and traditional house manufacture. You will visit on the tour the landing site of Captain James Cook in 1777, the Opunohu agricultural school and Belvedere lookout point before following shady trails within the forest between the ancient archaeological sites. Your transport will be on the traditional "Le truck" providing vista views and spectacular scenery along the way.

Please note: The forest trails are all downhill but can be slick after rain and tree roots sometimes cross the trails. Insect repellent is provided. A small bottle of water is recommended for the trek. Bamboo staffs are provided to give stability if needed. A second Tahitian guide is always at the back of the line for any additional aid during the trek. Bring some money as purchases (organic vanilla, native jam preserves, and real vanilla ice cream!) can be bought at the agricultural school. People with major knee, back/neck problems should not take the tour. It is an easy to medium trek for people in moderate to good health. Total length of the tour 4 hours with 2 of walking the 3 miles through the forest. On Sundays the Agricultural School is closed.

Led by your guide, you will either cruise along the west coast of Moorea, or through the spectacular Opunohu or Cook's bay. Along the way, a stop will be made at Motu Ono for an opportunity to feed the elegant and graceful rays as they swim around you in the shallow water. Fresh fruit and beverages will then be served on the motu.

Following your visit, you will be transferred to the wave runner center, then back to the pier.
