Guest Hosts

Scott Homler

Scott Homler will be on the following sailings:

The Director of Translation and Interpreting at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Scott Homler interprets, translates, and lectures on a variety of subjects in the humanities, applied linguistics, and language policy. He also serves as a legal and conference interpreter and works with the Department of State’s International Visiting Leadership Program on assignments that regularly take him around the country. His international experiences include Fulbright research in North Africa, teaching assignments in Europe, international programs administration in the UK and France, international development projects, cultural and historical immersion programs in the French Caribbean, and numerous tours to South Pacific.

Scott’s interest in art history emerged when he taught French civilization and began incorporating art as a primary resource for discussions on cultural identity. His art history lectures cover mainly European art from the Renaissance to the Post-Impressionist era, and his approach seeks to account for the numerous intersections between art, philosophy, cultural norms, and history.

He is eager to share his expertise with you aboard The Gauguin in a series of lectures. Among the topics he might discuss are:

1. Life on Canvas: the European Arts Scenes that Inspired Gauguin.

Key to understanding the radical nature of impressionism and post-impressionism is the tremendous tension between artistic movements. Gauguin and others became artists because they found new ways of seeing. In this presentation, Scott contrasts works of two or three representative styles.

2. Tristes Tropiques: Understanding the Melancholia of Gauguin’s Figures

The ambiguity in the eyes of Gauguin’s subjects still fascinates admirers of his work. Indeed, Gauguin’s passion for his work often seems betrayed by the indifference of his subjects. This session will explore how artist, subject, and viewer collaborate to create a complex rapport in some of Gauguin’s most important works.

3. Sacred Temples of the Flesh: Entangling Sensuality and Spirituality

Were Gauguin’s bold representations of Polynesia an overt defiance of European social values? Was he seeking to recreate a paradise of the flesh that felt like spiritual redemption? Readings of his major paintings will be the focus of this presentation.

4. Paradise on Earth: Tahiti in French Arts and Letters

Gauguin’s paintings reinforced some conceptions of Tahitian life that had been commonplace since the 18th century. Scott uses passages from Denis Diderot’s remarkable Voyages of Bougainville to “narrate” some of the paintings.

5. Painting from an Other World: Gauguin’s Artistic Techniques

In this presentation, Scott focuses specifically on color and form to understand how Gauguin helped launch a movement known as Fauvism and compares him to one or two other “beastly” French or European painters.

Scott Homler will be on the following sailings:
