Guest Hosts

Denny Whitford

Oceanographer & Meteorologist

Denny Whitford will be on the following sailings:

Dr. Denny Whitford has a love for our oceans that was kindled as a young teenager when he sailed aboard a large oil tanker voyaging along the East Coast of the United States. That first encounter with life at sea was a memorable one because he subsequently applied to, and graduated with honors from, the U.S. Naval Academy with a bachelor’s degree in oceanography.

After graduation, Denny learned how to drive large ships and fly jet aircraft aboard aircraft carriers. He then pursued his love of the oceans by attending graduate school and earning a master’s degree in oceanography and meteorology, and a Ph.D. in physical oceanography. He subsequently used his knowledge and experience to locate hostile submarines during the Cold War, lead a one-year scientific expedition to map uncharted waters of the Indonesian archipelago, and forecast weather and ocean conditions for naval operations around the world.

In his naval career, Denny held multiple commands and directed several scientific organizations. As Professor and Chairman of the U.S. Naval Academy Oceanography Department, he led the largest undergraduate physical oceanography program in the U.S. After a successful 30-year U.S. Navy career, Denny retired with the rank of Navy Captain. A former NASA astronaut candidate, Denny is currently a Professor at the University of Maryland, where he has been honored as Professor of the Year. “Dr. Denny” now uses his years of practical experience in oceanography and meteorology to teach his students about the oceans and atmosphere. He is listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.

Join us aboard The Gauguin for Denny's engaging presentations, which will both educate and entertain … and change forever the way you experience the ocean. Possible topics include:
