Coral Reef Ecologist

Robert Carpenter is a coral reef ecologist and Professor of Biology at California State University, Northridge in Los Angeles, California. He received his doctoral degree from the University of Georgia and has been conducting research on coral reefs for the past 30 years in locations throughout the world, including the Caribbean, Hawaii, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, Guam, Palau, and French Polynesia. For the past 15 years, much of his research has focused on the coral reefs of Moorea, French Polynesia, as part of the Moorea Coral Reef Long-term Ecological Research program. He is a principal investigator for this US National Science Foundation-funded project. The project is quantifying temporal changes in the coral reefs around Moorea and the processes underlying these changes, with the goal of developing predictions about how these reefs will respond to ongoing global changes. Robert also is a lead scientist on another NSF-funded project in Moorea, studying the effects of ocean acidification on coral reef organisms and reef ecosystems.
