For nine years, Mark Eddowes has captivated guests of the m/s Paul Gauguin with fascinating tales of French Polynesia’s storied past, sharing his wealth of knowledge through lectures that that range from “The Cult of the Tiki” and “The Ancient Culture of the Marquesas Islands” to the real story of the Mutiny on the Bounty. These lectures are often cited as a highlight by our guests.
Scott Harvey grew up in California’s Sierra Mountains region, but it was as a high school foreign-exchange student in the Rhineland Pfalz region of Germany that he developed a keen interest in wine.
He began his practical enology training at Montevina Winery in Amador County, after a stint at California State University at Sacramento. In 1975, he returned to Germany for further training in enology, apprenticing at K. Fitz-Ritter Winery while attending the Weinbau Schule in Neustadt. Between the two continents, he was fueled by an insatiable curiosity that they both could deliver, and he began developing a unique, signature style that blends influences of Old World Europe and New World California.
Once again returning to Montevina Winery, Scott focused on all aspects of winemaking and running a wine estate, from farming the grapes to marketing the wine effectively. In 1978, at the age of 23, he took over as Head Winemaker for Story Winery, also in Amador County.
Named Winemaker and General Manager of Santino Winery in 1979, Scott developed an ambitious winery plan for the Santino family. Combining his German training and innovative style, he crafted the best wines possible from the soils and climatic conditions of the region and is credited with placing Amador County firmly on the California wine map. As Santino and later Renwood became leading wineries in Amador County, garnering critical acclaim, the wine world was paying attention. Amador County was now recognized as a world-class wine-growing appellation.
In 1996, Scott was recruited as Partner, Winemaker & President for the newly purchased Folie a Deux Winery in Napa Valley. When he combined forces with the Lead Partner, renowned Winemaker Richard Peterson, Ph.D, a formidable winemaking team was launched. In his new role, Scott pursued his commitment to award-winning Cabernets made from the Estate Vineyards in Napa Valley while continuing his passion for Amador County Zinfandel.
Access to Scott’s original Grandpère vineyard in Amador County and close relationships with premier Amador County growers resulted in award-winning wines all around for Folie a Deux. In addition, Scott’s creation, the Menage a Trois line of wines, was an instant commercial success. In 2004, Folie a Deux, now a respected brand, was sold to Sutter Home/Trinchero Winery.
Scott was finally positioned and ready to start his own venture, and he had the ideal partner—his wife, Jana, a wine industry veteran. Scott’s wines reflect his roots: they are approachable, food-friendly, and full of luscious fruit. Join us aboard The Gauguin for a presentation and tasting of the couple’s Amador Barbera and Zinfandel.
