Depart the pier and transfer to the launching point in Fare, Huahine's main village. After your guide gives you safety and riding instructions, you will enjoy a wave runner ride of about an hour in the lagoon, admiring Huahine's magnificent landscape from the perspective of the water. You will also have time to stop for a swim before returning to the wave runner launching point for your transfer back to the pier.

Cultural highlights of Huahine

Depart the pier for a ride by coach to Fare, Huahine’s main village. Enjoy a leisurely guided stroll around the village, then visit a vanilla plantation, where you will observe the process of drying vanilla and learn different ways to cook with this ubiquitous spice.
Then, proceed to Maeva, one of Polynesian’s most important archaeological sites. Upon arrival, you will discover some well-preserved marae, or ancient Polynesian temples. You will also see fish traps that were built centuries ago and are still in use today. Your next visit will be to Faie, home of the famous blue-eyed eels that populate a stream running through the village. You will even watch as your guide feeds these enormous eels. Visit archaeological sites, sacred blue-eyed eels, a black pearl farm, and an easy 40-minute snorkel on this land and sea tour of Huahine.
Your tour will depart the pier by off road vehicle and cross the bridge to Huahine Nui (big Huahine). Head around the majestic bay where the m/s Paul Gauguin is anchored, then ascend the island's steepest road for a spectacular panoramic view over Maroe Bay and take a photo with the ship in the background. After, a stop will be made to feed the sacred giant blue-eyed eels that live in the stream running through the village of Faie.
Continue your adventure along the lake Fauna Nui to Maeva, the most extensive archaeological site in the Pacific. Here, you will see stone temples and ancient fish traps still in use today restored by archaeologists.
Afterwards, take a short Polynesian outrigger canoe trip to visit “Huahine Pearl Farm and Pottery”, where you will learn the secrets of the black pearl and see their unique blue pottery made with a glaze found at the bottom of the lagoon while pearl farming. The pottery is available for purchase, and refreshments will be served at the pearl farm.
Cruise the lagoon for a short trip on a regular boat and a snorkel stop to Motu Te Tiare. Enjoy the turquoise lagoon and tropical fish with your experienced local guide.
Return to the pier with spectacular views of the island.
The snorkeling stop is for all levels of experience, and people can start in shallow water to go as far out as comfortable. Depart the pier by off-road vehicle for the drive to Huahine Nui. Visit the village of Faie, and its famed blue-eyed eels. Next, you will take a short outrigger trip to visit "Huahine Pearl Farm and Pottery", where they will share with you the secrets of the black pearl and you will have a chance to purchase their famous blue pottery made from a glaze found at the bottom of the lagoon while pearl farming.
Continue on to Maeva, the island's most important marae. Drive along Lake Fauna Nui before arriving in Fare. Free time will be made available for you to explore. Return drive to the pier.
Although the off-road vehicle will remain on the main road for most of the drive, this tour also involves travel over non-paved roads with steep ascents and descents. This tour is not recommended for guests with back and/or neck problems, guests who suffer from vertigo or motion sickness, or guests with limited mobility. Robin and Danuta Pfeiffer are the owners and winemakers of Pfeiffer Winery and Vineyards, an ultra-premium, sustainable, 70-acre vineyard with an international reputation for producing world-class Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. It is one of the oldest vineyards in Oregon’s acclaimed South Willamette Valley—part of a region named the “2016 Wine Region of the Year” by Wine Enthusiast magazine, and its Pinot Noir was once chosen for a presidential dinner in Washington D.C. The winery produces only 1,200 cases per year, and its exquisite, boutique offerings are available only directly from the winery or through its wine club; they are not distributed to stores or restaurants.
The Pfeiffers have both enjoyed established careers in addition to their success as winemakers. Robin taught Spanish for 32 years and was a middle-school counselor, and Danuta was a broadcast journalist and is an award-winning author. In 1984, when they learned that their family’s chicken ranch and sheep farm would excel in growing fine Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, they transformed it into a vineyard.
Robin’s passion for education remains on full display at the winery. Its unique tasting room is a candle-lit cave offering educational and personal, one-on-one winetasting experiences. The Pfeiffer’s wine knowledge, enthusiasm, and stories will enchant you as much as their highly regarded wine!

Huahine safari expedition

Discover the beauty of Huahine on this 4x4 tour of the islands.
Depart the pier by off-road vehicle for the drive to Huahine Nui. Visit the village of Faie, and its famed blue-eyed eels. Next, you will take a short outrigger trip to visit "Huahine Pearl Farm and Pottery", where they will share with you the secrets of the black pearl and you will have a chance to purchase their famous blue pottery made from a glaze found at the bottom of the lagoon while pearl farming.

Huahine exploration by 4WD & boat

Visit archaeological sites, sacred blue-eyed eels, a black pearl farm, and an easy 40-minute snorkel on this land and sea tour of Huahine.
Your tour will depart the pier by off road vehicle and cross the bridge to Huahine Nui (big Huahine). Head around the majestic bay where the m/s Paul Gauguin is anchored, then ascend the island's steepest road for a spectacular panoramic view over Maroe Bay and take a photo with the ship in the background. After, a stop will be made to feed the sacred giant blue-eyed eels that live in the stream running through the village of Faie.
Continue your adventure along the lake Fauna Nui to Maeva, the most extensive archaeological site in the Pacific. Here, you will see stone temples and ancient fish traps still in use today restored by archaeologists.
Afterwards, take a short Polynesian outrigger canoe trip to visit “Huahine Pearl Farm and Pottery”, where you will learn the secrets of the black pearl and see their unique blue pottery made with a glaze found at the bottom of the lagoon while pearl farming. Depart the pier and transfer to the launching point in Fare, Huahine's main village. Cultural highlights of Huahine

Depart the pier for a ride by coach to Fare, Huahine’s main village. Enjoy a leisurely guided stroll around the village, then visit a vanilla plantation, where you will observe the process of drying vanilla and learn different ways to cook with this ubiquitous spice.
Then, proceed to Maeva, one of Polynesian’s most important archaeological sites. Upon arrival, you will discover some well-preserved marae, or ancient Polynesian temples. Boarding "Le Truck", French Polynesia's famous local style bus, you will depart from Maroe Village on the small island of Huahine Iti, crossing the bridge to Huahine Nui, or 'big island'. Here you will drive past lush green valleys and turquoise lagoon through the capital town of Fare, where Captain James Cook sojourned on his visits to the island.
Your first stop is Maeva village, considered to be one of French Polynesia's most important archaeological areas and home to the largest pre-historic habitation site in Polynesia. During your walk through the village, you will explore the archaeological sites along the lake shore and the Fare Pote'e Museum. You will learn about Polynesian origins and migrations, traditional society, religion, botany, European explorers and get a first-hand look at various traditional tools, handicrafts and artifacts.
You will continue on to Mata'ire'a hill, just above the Village of Maeva and home to more than 200 stone structures, including marae, agricultural terraces, house foundations, fortification walls and burial platforms.
Your next stop, via "Le Truck", is a local family run vanilla plantation where you will have the opportunity to purchase various vanilla products. Continuing on, you will stop to see and learn about the 500 year old fish traps that thanks to restoration work are used again today by the people of Maeva Village.
Your return journey to port, will take you through the village of Faie where your guide will feed the island's giant blue-eyed eels that swim in the stream, before enjoying a photo-stop at the Belvedere Lookout, for panoramic views of Huahine Iti and beautiful Maroe Bay.

Catamaran sail

Depart the pier aboard the beautiful, 43-foot catamaran, and sail to Moorea's northern coast, then on to a pair of French Polynesian's most beautiful bays: Cook's and Opunohu. Aito Off-Road safari

Depart the pier in an off-road vehicle for a journey inside the volcanic crater from which Moorea was created. En route, you will discover the heart of a huge pineapple plantation inside the island's deepest valley. Moorea, Polynesian's Green Garden, is renowned for its Agricultural School, which receives students from all the outer islands. A stop will be made here to sample some homemade jam. Ice cream and local fruit juices will also be available for purchase.
Your guide will then drive you across a large plantation filled with vanilla, bananas, grapefruits, and oranges, and will acquaint you with the island's diverse flora and fauna. Next, you will continue to an open-air temple, or marae.
After a stop to learn about the Polynesian culture, you will ascend to the top of Belvedere lookout for spectacular vistas over Cook's and Opunohu Bays. You will then descend that mountain and proceed to Magic Mountain, where a little path surrounded by grapefruit, lemon, and orange trees opens up to a panoramic view stretching across Opunohu Bay, the lagoon, and the sea.

Next, you will continue on to a gorgeous sandy islet surrounded by transparent turquoise waters that are shallow enough to walk comfortably in the sea. Upon arrival, you will have a rare opportunity to feed the awaiting rays; they will gracefully glide around you in exchange for a piece of fish. Your tour will conclude with a stop at another uninhabited islet nearby. Here, you will be served refreshments and have an opportunity to explore the beach and swim. You will also be invited to go snorkeling in water 6-10 feet (2-3 meters) deep. Depart the pier for the boat transfer to the base. Upon arrival, you will receive your safety and riding instructions from your guide, then embark your two-seat catajet for a 1.5-hour ride in an idyllic lagoon on Moorea. Led by your guide at an easy speed, you will take in panoramic views of the East Coast and Cook and Opunohu Bays, or the West Coast (weather permitting).
Next, a stop will be made for snorkeling in the shallow waters. After putting on your mask, fins and snorkel, you will explore the beauty of the tropical fish and coral formations. Your adventure will continue with a stop on a sand bar, where you will have an opportunity to play with stingrays.
Following refreshments, you will return to the catajet base, then be transferred back to the pier.

Aquablue – Underwater walk

Explore Moorea's splendid marine life in a unique new way during this underwater walking and snorkeling adventure.
Depart the pier for the drive to the Intercontinental Moorea Resort & Spa. Upon arrival, you will meet your instructor, then be outfitted with your wet suit and water shoes before embarking on a 10-minute boat ride inside the majestic lagoon of Moorea. The crew will anchor the boat off the coast of Motu Fareone or inside the lagoon in Papetoai (depending on sea and weather conditions). Your certified diving instructor will explain your safety and diving instructions, help you put on your helmet, and assist you with descending the ladder into the crystal-clear water.
You will then commence your 30-minute underwater adventure at a depth of 12 feet. Along the way, you will see an abundance of fish that include triggerfish, butterfly fish, groupers, and parrotfish, swimming amid beautiful coral heads. Stingrays are also plentiful at this dive spot. While your guide feeds them, you will be able to take a closer look at these unusual ocean denizens.
Following your tour, you will be returned to the pier.
This does not require any prior scuba or snorkeling experience beyond being comfortable on and in the water. Guests will spend approximately 30 minutes underwater. The helmet, while heavy, is placed on your head as you enter the water and taken off as you exit. You will remain connected to the boat's air supply via an air hose. Your tour starts with a drive from the pier to the local Airport - Temae, where your air plane is waiting. Continue south and see the less developed part of the island.
During your flight you might also spot dolphins, sharks and stingrays in the crystal clear waters of the lagoon. Depart the pier aboard a covered boat for the scenic ride to Moorea's reef. Spinner dolphins and rough-tooth dolphins can be seen around Moorea, with spinner dolphins regularly swimming inside the lagoon. Most often you will see schools of acrobatic spinner dolphins, while listening to informative commentary about their remarkable life and society at sea. Dolphins are found on 95% of the tours, but the engaging narrative and sheer magnificence of Moorea's coastline will ensure a rewarding time in any event.

Trails of the ancients trek

Do not Miss this fun, informative, and interactive visit to a relatively little visited side of Tahiti, as on-board lecturer archaeologist Mark Eddowes leads a unique cultural tour of the upland rain forest of Opunohu valley. Mark Eddowes has worked clearing, mapping, excavating and restoring archaeological sites in the Opunohu valley since the 1980s. He works particularly on the life of the ancient Tahitians in this natural environment, studying their ancient habitation sites, agricultural terrace complexes, stone tool workshops, and ancient temples or marae. The recognized expert on the marae of the Society Islands, Mark will share with you his research results into the history of the temples, the rituals practice there, and the warrior chiefs associated with them.
You will also learn about the uses in ancient times of the flora and tree species of the island for canoe manufacture, medicinal uses, and the sculpture of ti'i (tiki figures) and traditional house manufacture. Also, on the itinerary of this tour are the landing site of Captain James Cook in 1777, the Opunohu agricultural school, and Belvedere lookout point. Then, follow shady trails within the forest, between the ancient archaeological sites.
Your transport will be on the traditional Le Truck, providing vista views and spectacular scenery along the way.
The forest trails are all downhill but can be slick after rain, and tree roots sometimes cross the trails. Insect repellent is provided. Bamboo staffs are provided to give stability if needed. A second Tahitian guide is always at the back of the line for any additional aid during the trek. Bring some money, as purchases (organic vanilla, native jam preserves, and real vanilla ice cream!) can be bought at the agricultural school. A small bottle of water is also recommended for the trek. Not recommended for people with heart disease, lung disease, or muscle, joint, or balance problems. Total length of the tour is 4 hours, 2 of which are spent walking the miles through the forest. Enjoy breakfast aboard Le Paul Gauguin before checking out and disembarking.
Our local representative will greet you at the pier and you will depart by coach on an island exploration.
First stop: Venus Point on Matavai Bay. Here you will see a Victorian-era lighthouse and monument commemorating the passage of Captain James Cook who came to observe the transit of Venus in 1769 as part of his work for the Royal Society.
Next, you will visit the lookout at Taharaa known as One Tree Hill. Take in panoramic views of the island and beyond. Finally, you will be able to enjoy some free time at the Papeete Market and pick up any souvenirs and island favorites you may have forgotten during your journey through the islands.
The tour will end at the InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa, where you will have lunch.
After lunch, check in to your Day Room upon arrival. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon/evening relaxing in your room or taking advantage of two freshwater swimming pools and a beach.
Dinner is on your own. You will transfer to the Faa’a International Airport in the late afternoon, and check-in for your Paul Gauguin Cruises’ selected flight or any other flight (provided that you have previously communicated your flight schedule to your travel agent).
The resort:
Located on a vibrant blue lagoon, the InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa is the ideal base to relax as you transition from the ship to the airport. You will have access to all hotel amenities including two freshwater swimming pools, a beach, and an overwater restaurant. If time and availability allow, there is also a spa and a dive center at additional cost.
This program includes the accommodation in Garden View Room at the InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa. Ocean View Rooms and Lagoon Overwater Bungalows are also available depending on availability and on a supplement basis. Contact your travel professional for further detail.
