Bob Krist

Bob Krist is a freelance photographer and filmmaker whose work has taken him to all seven continents.  He has been stranded on a glacier in Iceland, nearly run down by charging bulls in southern India, and knighted with a cutlass during a Trinidad voodoo ceremony.

A longtime contract photographer for National Geographic, Krist was named “Travel Photographer of the Year” by the Society of American Travel Writers three times, in 1994, 2007, and 2008. He has also won awards in the Pictures of the YearCommunication Arts, and World Press Photo competitions.

A late-career convert to video storytelling, his short films have been exhibited in film festivals in the US, Iceland, and Italy, as well as National Geographic’s website, and have won gold and silver awards for broadcast travel journalism In the Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism competition, administered by the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism. 

His most recent book is a black and white monograph of portraits and landscapes called Old Souls & Timeless Places (2019). It won the Gold Medal for Best Travel Book, 2020 in the Lowell Thomas competition.

To date, Bob and Rick Steves are the only travel journalists who have won gold medals in both the book and film categories of this prestigious competition.

Bob’s other books include The New York Times bestseller In Tuscany with Frances Mayes (2000). He also photographed the coffee table books Caribbean (1995) and Portrait of the Caribbean 1996 and Low Country: Charleston to Savannah (2004), A Photo Tour of New York (2001), and Impressions of Bucks County (2002).

His how-to book Spirit of Place: The Art of The Traveling Photographer (2000) was hailed by American Photographer magazine as “the best book about travel photography we’ve ever read.”

When not on the road, Bob and his wife Peggy divide their time between Boothbay Harbor, Maine, and Annapolis, Maryland. They are the parents of three sons, Matthew, Brian, and Jonathan.
