Waisale Rain Forest & Reserve
Duration:
3.5 Hours - $119

The Waisale Reserve is one of the few remaining unexploited forests in Fiji and is the natural habitat for the native Fijian hardwood - some of the trees being more than 100 years old. Around 50% of the protected area is dense 'dakua' forest (Fiji Kauri). Other native trees prevalent in the area include native softwoods such as Yaka and Yasi. There are about 30 species of orchids found in the area.

Birds found in the reserve include the rare Orange Dove, the Red Shining Parrot, the Coloured Lory and the Orange Breasted Myzomela among others. So far, 21 species of birds have been found in the reserve, which represents about 40% of the breeding land bird species found in Fiji. The quiet setting is disturbed only by the occasional sound of the barking pigeon. Take time to relax in the bure beside the rock pool which is home to finfish species, eel, prawn and freshwater snails. The reserve freshwater fauna are unique so the pool is kept undisturbed and is not suitable for swimming.

Please note: Guests are encouraged to wear a hat, sunglasses, sun screen and comfortable walking shoes for this tour. Please bring bottled water from the ship. This tour is not recommended for guests with heart conditions, as this tour includes strenuous uphill and downhill walking.
