Somewhere deep in the South Pacific towering mountains rise from a cobalt sea, their jagged cliffs plunging down to rugged shores, their flanks carpeted in deep green jungle. These are the Marquesas, among the youngest islands in French Polynesia as well as the least visited. This two-week journey explores four of these fascinating rainforested isles, balanced with the pristine soft sands and gin-clear waters of the fabled Society Islands and the fluorescent marine wonders of the Tuamotu Archipelago.

Discovery for Young Explorers

The South Pacific is a dream destination—and aboard the m/s Paul Gauguin, it’s also a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for your family to strengthen bonds and create memories you’ll cherish forever, through our Moana Explorer program.

Offered in partnership with Te mana o te moana, a South Pacific marine education and conservation foundation, this one-of-a-kind program invites children and teens, ages 6-15, to discover and value the natural wonders of this breathtaking part of the world through hands-on, interactive learning.

 

PRE CRUISE TAHITIAN

(1 nuit)

Turn your transfer into a respite and enjoy a relaxing day in a beautiful resort setting with Paul Gauguin Cruises’ Day Room Program.

Papeete

You will be greeted at the airport by our local English-speaking representative upon disembarking your Paul Gauguin Cruises’ selected flight.

Transfer to the InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa and check-in. Enjoy a few hours of relaxation before check-out at 11 am.

Lunch is included at the hotel.

After lunch, you will head towards the west coast of Tahiti to visit a marae and the Museum of Tahiti and Her Islands. You will then be transferred to Le Paul Gauguin to embark.

The resort:

Located on a vibrant blue lagoon, the InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa is the ideal base to combine relaxation and island discovery. You will have access to all hotel amenities including two freshwater swimming pools, a beach, and an overwater restaurant. A spa and dive center are also available at additional cost.

PRE CRUISE RELAXING SOJOURN IN MOOREA

Velvety mountain peaks, white-sand beaches with swaying palms, sheltered azure bays and gentle breezes: Moorea is the very picture of the ideal island getaway. And you can immerse yourself in its splendor with a stay at a luxury resort that offers world-class service in a spectacular setting.

Day 1 – Papeete/Moorea

You will be greeted at the Faa’a International Airport by our local English-speaking representative upon disembarking your flight (provided that you have previously communicated your flight schedule to your travel agent).

You will be transferred to the pier and embark on a ferry to Moorea.

Upon arriving Moorea, you will be met by a representative from the Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort 5* and will transfer to the resort. After early check-in, day is at leisure.

Day 2 & 3 – Moorea

Set against a stunning mountain backdrop melting into a crystal clear lagoon with views over the island of Tahiti, the Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort is the perfect setting for a relaxing vacation. The bungalows, built over the water or surrounded by landscaped gardens, are made from natural materials and feature a rain shower. Make the most of the resort's white sandy beach, the most beautiful on Moorea, to sunbathe or explore a lagoon teeming with tropical marine life. Facilities include two restaurants, a bar, an outdoor swimming pool and a day spa.

Days are at leisure.

Day 4 – Moorea/Papeete

Check out after an included breakfast and you will be transferred to the port of Moorea, to embark on a ferry back to Papeete. Upon arriving in Tahiti, a local representative will assist you in embarking Le Paul Gauguin for your journey through the islands.

Board your Zodiac® (or similar boat) for a 30-minute ride (each way) to the north pass in the lagoon. Your guide will give you safety instructions and information about the site before you enter the water from the boat. Depart the ship by small local boats across the beautiful UNESCO biosphere reserve of Fakarava to the white sand beach of Teahatea just after the Garuae Pass.

The boat is (8 m) 50 long, special for excursions. It is equipped with all safety equipment and with a covered top and sides. The boat ride takes approximately 30 minutes depending on the weather conditions. You will have 2-2 ½ hours of free time to relax on the beach, enjoy a swim in the crystal clear lagoon or go snorkelling. Discover the southern pass of Fakarava

From the north of the island of Fakarava, you'll set off by boat to discover the southern pass of Fakarava and the village of Tetamanu. On your first stopover, you will have the opportunity to go snorkeling at the village of Tetamanu. During this snorkeling in one of the most beautiful coral reefs in Polynesia, you will be amazed by the impressive underwater life, sharks and a multitude of tropical fish.

Your second stop is a 10-minute boat ride from Tetamanu, the famous pink sandbanks of the southern atoll of Fakarava, where during this 20-30 minute stop you will be able to enjoy a swim in the crystal-clear waters of the lagoon. Re-board the boat for a 30-minute trip to Hirifa, where a Paumotu barbecue (local Polynesian style) will be served after an hour's preparation, giving you time to enjoy and relax on the beach. The buffet includes fresh fish (raw and cooked), rice and coconut bread, as well as a selection of drinks. After lunch, you can take part in a cultural weaving demonstration (hats and crowns). Nuku Hiva’s spectacular beauty is yours to discover during this off-road adventure in the Taipivai Valley.

Depart the pier for the ride to the Taipivai Valley, one of the richest archaeological sites in the Marquesas Islands. The Taipivai Valley is a location made famous by the American writer and former sailor, Herman Melville (1819-1891), who deserted his ship and hid in this valley. Captured by indigenous natives, he lived in the Taipivai Valley for three weeks, a period during which he observed their way of life. This experience was the inspiration for his first novel. En route to the Taipivai Valley, you will ride through the island’s interior along a steep trail lined with lush flora and vegetation, then traverse exquisite mountain terrain.

Along the way, you will enjoy many opportunities to take magnificent photographs, as you stop several times to take in spectacular vistas of the coastline, bays, and valleys. At one particular stop, you will see your ship anchored in the Bay of Taihoae. Next, you will drive through Taipivai’s small agricultural villages, then proceed to a long stretch of beach at the end of the village. Your tour will depart the pier by off road vehicle and cross the bridge to Huahine Nui (big Huahine). Boarding "Le Truck", French Polynesia's famous local style bus, you will depart from Maroe Village on the small island of Huahine Iti, crossing the bridge to Huahine Nui, or 'big island'. Here you will drive past lush green valleys and turquoise lagoon through the capital town of Fare, where Captain James Cook sojourned on his visits to the island.

Your first stop is Maeva village, considered to be one of French Polynesia's most important archaeological areas and home to the largest pre-historic habitation site in Polynesia. During your walk through the village, you will explore the archaeological sites along the lake shore and the Fare Pote'e Museum. You will learn about Polynesian origins and migrations, traditional society, religion, botany, European explorers and get a first-hand look at various traditional tools, handicrafts and artifacts.

You will continue on to Mata'ire'a hill, just above the Village of Maeva and home to more than 200 stone structures, including marae, agricultural terraces, house foundations, fortification walls and burial platforms.

Your next stop, via "Le Truck", is a local family run vanilla plantation where you will have the opportunity to purchase various vanilla products. Depart the pier for the brief transfer to the helipad. After boarding your helicopter, you will take off for a 30-minute flight seeing tour over Bora Bora, the Pearl of the Pacific. You will then head towards north and enjoy a bird’s eye view over the famous heart-shaped island, Tupai. Along the way, you can use the headphones to listen to your pilot's commentary as he points out the sights below. Your bird's-eye view of Bora Bora will include spectacular views and photo opportunities of the world's most beautiful lagoon and reefs, along with manta rays and sharks, an adventure some call Heli-snorkeling. Relaxing time at the Lagoonarium

Depart the pier in Vaitape (or Anau) aboard an outrigger canoe for a scenic ride in the Bora Bora lagoon (weather permitting). You will then continue to the Lagoonarium, with its white sandy beach and open-air aquarium. From the beach you will have a magnificent view of the island of Bora Bora. Upon arrival, enjoy an opportunity to swim in separate enclosed areas. During your visit, you will also participate in up-close encounters with marine life, including sharks, rays, jack fish, turtles, parrot fish, and more. Snorkeling begins from the beach in shallow water ranging in depth from 3-10 feet and is suitable for beginners and experienced snorkelers. Your local guides will show you how to carefully approach the marine life, will present you the motu and you will invite to participate in weaving coconut palm, sheathing coconut and pareo demonstrations.

After your visit, you will be served fresh fruit and spend some time relaxing on the beach before heading back to the pier.

Because the outrigger canoes are not always uncovered, the ride can be extremely sunny or wet from spray or rain. At times transfer is by car and boat. Guests exiting the canoe must use the ladder on the south side and walk in shallow water back to the beach. A small souvenir shop is available on the island, and all purchases are cash only; U.S. dollars or Pacific Francs are accepted here. Changing facilities, a sitting area and basic rest room are also available. Wear reef shoes and a swimsuit under a cover-up, and bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and a towel from the ship. This tour is recommended for guests in good physical condition. Despite the fact the marine life is widely represented, it is not guaranteed to spot an animal presence when going out. Depart the pier aboard a Le truck. First, you will drive through the district of Fa'anui. A brief stop will be made at Fa'anui Bay for photographs of Mounts Otemanu and Pahia.

Your drive will continue on to the ancient ceremonial site of Fa'anui Marae, followed by a look at the bunkers constructed by American GIs during WWII. Coral garden drift snorkeling

Depart the ship by covered motorized boat for a 15-minute ride along the west coast of Taha'a.

Upon arrival, you will disembark the boat for a guided walk across an uninhabited islet, or motu, located just off the coast. After reaching the other side of the motu, you will commence your snorkeling session. Your guide will lead you as the current carries you through the shallow lagoon on the way back to the boat. The drift can be moderate to strenuous depending on the strength of the current. The drift is done in a single line with one snorkeling guide leading the 12 snorkeller spaced 10 feet apart and one snorkelling guide closing up on the group. This area abounds with a spectacular variety of tropical fish and amazing coral.

Upon returning to the boat, refreshments and additional snorkelling time will be made available before you are transferred back to Motu Mahana.

Depart the pier in an off-road vehicle for a journey inside the volcanic crater from which Moorea was created. En route, you will discover the heart of a huge pineapple plantation inside the island's deepest valley. Moorea, Polynesian's Green Garden, is renowned for its Agricultural School, which receives students from all the outer islands. A stop will be made here to sample some homemade jam. Moorea's spectacular valleys, bays, and vistas are yours to discover during this guided ATV tour through the island.

Depart the pier in Cook's Bay for the brief transfer via minivan to the Hilton Moorea Lagoon & Spa, where the ATVs are based. Upon arrival, you will receive your safety and riding instructions. Then, begin your ATV ride. Your guide will lead you along the road to Belvedere lookout for magnificent views and photo opportunities over Cook's Bay, Opunohu Bay, and Mt. Rotui.

You will also venture across the valley, through a river, and past pineapple fields, and stop at an ancient open-air temple, or marae, to learn about the Polynesian culture. Afterwards, you will continue on to the Moorea Agricultural School, then ride across this large plantation and down to the Paopao Valley.

From here, you will take the main road en route to the Fruit Juice Factory, where you will enjoy a brief stop. Then, ride back to the Hilton Lagoon & Spa.

Upon arrival, you will re-board your minivan for the return ride to the pier.

Experience the beauty of Cook's and Opunohu Bays from above and below the water during this snorkeling and beach adventure aboard a modern covered boat.

Depart the pier aboard a comfortable and modern boat featuring covered areas designed to protect you from the direct rays of the sun. As you cruise along these majestic bays, your captain will inform you about the legends, geography, and flora and fauna of Moorea.

Next, you will continue on to a gorgeous sandy islet surrounded by transparent turquoise waters that are shallow enough to walk comfortably in the sea. Upon arrival, you will have a rare opportunity to feed the awaiting rays; they will gracefully glide around you in exchange for a piece of fish. Your tour will conclude with a stop at another uninhabited islet nearby. Here, you will be served refreshments and have an opportunity to explore the beach and swim. You will also be invited to go snorkeling in water 6-10 feet (2-3 meters) deep. Discover the marine riches of the island on a tour dedicated to the research and observation of dolphins and sharks in Moorea. You will have an opportunity to slip into the water and swim with these graceful and curious animals and realize that man and these predators can live in harmony. Some dolphins are visible in the passes, at the entrance of the bays, others in the open ocean. On the other side of the barrier reef on the oceanic drop you can evolve with Gray sharks, lemon sharks and turtles always supervised by your guides. Refreshments will be available during the tour.

Depart the pier for the boat transfer to the base. Upon arrival, you will receive your safety and riding instructions from your guide, then embark your two-seat catajet for a 1.5-hour ride in an idyllic lagoon on Moorea. Led by your guide at an easy speed, you will take in panoramic views of the East Coast and Cook and Opunohu Bays, or the West Coast (weather permitting).

Next, a stop will be made for snorkeling in the shallow waters. After putting on your mask, fins and snorkel, you will explore the beauty of the tropical fish and coral formations. Your adventure will continue with a stop on a sand bar, where you will have an opportunity to play with stingrays.
